Audit: Detroit schools may have misused $53M
Comments 0 | Recommend 0DETROIT (AP) - An audit has found that Detroit Public Schools may have misused about $53 million in federal funds designated for low-income children from 2004 to 2006.
The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press report the U.S.
Department of Education's Office of Inspector General on Friday issued the audit of funds aimed at helping students at risk of failing to meet state academic standards.
District spokesman Steve Wasko says the audit criticized the district for expenditures that occurred under past administrations.
The audit says the state's largest school district should return the money or show that the money was used properly.
Wasko says officials have been working to find all the proper documentation.
