Wall collapses during a basement leak repair job

BATTLE CREEK (NEWS 3) - Newlyweds Jeff and Lyndie Edwards still can't believe the gaping hole under the east side of their home -- a hole left after the one of the basement cinderblock walls caved in while contractors were trying to fix a leak last month.

"It felt like an earthquake. It felt like the whole house was shaking," recalled Lyndie Edwards.

The 24-year-old was inside watching television on the morning of April 14th when the collapse happened.

"I heard cracking and I figured it was just [the contractors'] work. And I heard some more cracking and my dog started to do circles in front of me. And all of a sudden you hear a great boom, crash, and my house just started to crack and shake and fell down. And I ran for the back door."

The couple had called Everdry Waterproofing of Michiana based out of South Bend to fix the leak after seeing the company at the Home Expo.

"They sent out a representative. He went down, and he looked at the basement. He poked, and he prodded. And he said, 'Yep, you guys have a water leak, and we can fix it for you,'" said Jeff Edwards.

How much would the work cost?

"Fifteen-thousand-dollars," said Lyndie.

April 13th, the Edwards watched workers dig trenches around the house and break up the edges of the basement floor. "They put in a drain tile with this river rock," said Jeff holding up a handful of small rocks.

But he said workers learned that the house -- built in the 1920s -- did not have the foundation footing many newer homes have. But Jeff Edwards said they kept working.

Edwards said the next morning shortly after the contractors arrived to finish the work, the east wall of the basement collapsed.

He said two workers were inside at the time but were not injured.

The collapse created jagged cracks throughout the upstairs walls. One window was torqued to the point it cannot open.

Battle Creek Building Inspector Kim Tuck told News 3 he was going to condemn the house Monday, May 1st.

When News 3 contacted Everdry Waterproofing of Michiana, spokesman Rob Brison called the collapse "an unfortunate accident" and "an extreme rarity."

"We've handed it over to the insurance agency. We're pretty much out of the picture," said Brison.

The Edwards' insurance company will only fix damage from the main floor up -- but only after the basement is repaired.

The Edwards' next door neighbor, Christina Jones, pointed out where the roof was buckling. She said she can see it clearly from her computer room window. Now she fears the house may collapse onto her home.

"I'm worried about is this going to ruin our home as well," said Jones. "Are they going to have two homes that are ruined rather than just one?" she asked.

For now, the Edwards are living with their parents. They just want the problem fixed.

"It's our first home. We just got married," said Lyndie.

New 3 checked with the Better Business Bureau. It had a report listing Everdry Waterproofing of Michiana with an "unsatisfactory record" with the Bureau due to "a pattern of complaints" over a three-year period.

The BBB processed a total of 15 complaints about the company in 36 months. Of the 15 complaints, the BBB reported nine had been resolved; 4 were unresolved.
