Romney fires back with 1998 Obama video

Updated: Wednesday, September 19 2012, 10:11 PM EDT
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Mitt Romney campaign is pointing to a video of then-State Senator Barack Obama from 1998, in which the campaign alleges Obama said he supports redistribution of wealth.

"What we're going to have to do is somehow resuscitate the notion that government action can be effective at all," Obama said in the 1998 video.

"I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure that everybody's got a shot," the then-State Senator also said.

Wednesday, Romney told donors in Atlanta that it's not the way America works.

He said it's an idea that would "kill the American entrepreneurship that's lifted our economy over the years."

Romney went on to claim that only he--and not President Obama--is equipped to help poor and middle-class Americans.

Romney's comments come just two days after a video surfaced showing Romney telling donors that nearly half of Americans "are dependent on government" and "believe they are victims."
