(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new study shows that new dads may be at a big risk for postpartum depression.

Researchers at Northwestern University say new fathers can be hit hard and younger dads are especially at risk.

Looking at more than 10,000 new fathers around the age of 25-years-old, depressive symptoms rose on average by 68-percent over the first five years of fatherhood.

The big increase takes place during the most important years of their child's lives.

However, fathers who did not live with their children showed symptoms before birth.
