Sense of smell could be indicator of Alzheimer's

Updated: Monday, July 14, 2014

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Your sense of smell could be an indication of Alzheimer's disease.

Scientists say new research shows that a decreased ability to correctly identify odors could associate with the loss of brain cell function.

The findings were reported at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Denmark this weekend.

Researchers also found that an eye exam could help in early diagnosis of Alzheimer's.

While more research is needed, doctors say the findings are promising because it would make detection less invasive and could allow for earlier treatment.
