Study shows fist bumps spread fewer germs than handshakes Updated: Monday, July 28, 2014 (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – It’s certainly more hip, and it just might be healthier. According to British researchers, a fist-bump spreads fewer germs than a handshake. A new study in the American Journal of Infection Control found that handshakes spread twice the amount of bacteria as fist bumps. In fact, doctors and nurses at a hospital in Dallas, Texas are now greeting patients with fist bumps just to be safe. As many as 75,000 patients with hospital acquired infections die each year in the United States. Some people are even pushing for a handshake ban at hospitals.
