Caffeine can affect baby birth weights

Updated: Tuesday, February 19 2013, 07:47 PM EST
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new study suggests that just one cup of coffee a day can lead to reduced baby birth weights.

Researchers in Norway looked at about 60,000 pregnancies, monitoring all caffeine intake.

They found even low levels of the stimulant raised the risk of babies being born with a lower weight than expected.

Coffee was the source of most of the caffeine, but tea and chocolate was on the list too.

Researchers say an infant can lose as much as 21 to 28 grams of body weight for every 100 milligrams of caffeine consumed.

The study also found that drinking coffee can lead to longer pregnancies.
