(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new colon cancer test is impressing researchers in the early stages.

The New England Journal of Medicine reports the test can detect over 90 percent of colon cancer and other curable cancer types.

Called colo-guard, it detects blood in a stool sample, plus DNA changes that can be a sign of polyps.

It doesn't require any preparation or diet restrictions.

The doctors who invented the test say it's an alternative to an invasive colonoscopy.

The test has not yet been approved by the FDA.
