New guidelines for ear infections

Updated: Tuesday, February 26 2013, 08:54 AM EST
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - New guidelines say when your child gets an ear infection, do not go straight to the doctor.

The American Academy of Pediatricians has revised its guidelines, saying you should monitor your child for at least three days before getting medical attention.

The idea is to see if the infection goes away on its own.

The reason they are now recommending the wait is the overuse of antibiotics, which is creating a medicine-resistant strain of bacteria.

They do say if your child has a serious ear infection with symptoms such as high fever and significant pain you should probably see a doctor right away.
