WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - President Obama is asking Congress to spend $100 million to start a new project to map the human brain.
"As humans, we can identify galaxies light years away, we can study particles smaller than the atom, but we still haven't unlocked the mystery of the three pounds of matter that sits between our ears," the President said in reference to the request.
President Obama says the brain initiative could create jobs, unlock the mysteries of the brain, and could eventually lead to cures for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, as well as autism.
The project would require scientists to create new technology that can record the electrical activity of individual cells and complex circuits of the brain.
He says the research has the potential to improve the lives of billions of people.
