Researchers testing new migrane treatments

Updated: Wednesday, April 23, 2014 |
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Exciting news Wednesday night for the estimated 12 percent of Americans who suffer from migranes.

Researchers say new treatments are being tested that may prevent migranes before they begin by blocking a protein that's known to trigger them.

One drug is given as a shot, while the other is given intravenously.

Scientists will soon test the drugs with larger groups of patients.

If the medicines continue to work safely and effectively, they could soon be available for clinical use.
