Tips for fighting the common cold

Tips for fighting the common cold story image
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It's that time of year when the common cold becomes much more common.

So what works and what doesn't when trying to treat the virus?

It's no big surprise, but a new study reports that clean hands are the key to prevention.

New research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found drugs combining antihistamines with decongestants or pain medication appear to be somewhat effective in treating colds in adults and older children, but not in younger kids.

Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help with pain and fever, but ibuprofen may work better for children.

Cough medicines showed a slight benefit in adults, and honey seemed to have some benefit for children over one year of age.
