CHINA (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An unusual medical procedure has saved a man's hand.

Doctors in China saved the man's hand by attaching it to his ankle.

The man lost his hand in a workshop accident, but doctors say his arm was too severely injured to reattach the hand right away.

So, they attached it to his ankle to keep blood flowing through the hand while the arm healed.

After about a month, doctors attached the hand to its normal place.

They say it will take about six months for all of the nerves to recover.

Doctors say they've done 20 similar operations in China, and all have been successful.
