After 3 decades, Holland recycling program going strong

After 3 decades, Holland recycling program going strong story image
HOLLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The City of Holland has spent decades working to eliminate its carbon footprint.

After more than 30 years of recycling, the program continues to cut down on the amount of waste reaching landfills, and hopes to eliminate it altogether.

Now, Holland is having some fun with its refuse program this summer, hoping that people walk away with a better understanding of it all.

"It takes so much less energy to start with what we have than to start with virgin product," explained Recycling Education Coordinator Mary Ann Hensley.

Now, the city's "I Love To Recycle" contest is reminding residents to think twice before tossing something in the trash.

Those willing are eligible for free recycling based on how well they know the recycling rules.

The eventual goal for the city is to have nothing in recycling that should have been garbage--and vice versa.

"The learning lesson is what is recyclable, what goes in the yellow bags," Hensley said. "Because we have added to our list of acceptable yellow bag items."

The city will be selecting winners each week throughout the summer.
