KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Young adults are getting a taste of what it's like to be a police officer, with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Explorers program.

Explorers are between the ages of 14 and 21, who are interested in law enforcement and public safety fields.

The program highlights the public safety profession by providing explorers with things like ridealongs, classroom instruction and hands-on training.

They also assist around the county as civilian officers, by working at Western Michigan University sports events and other public venues.

Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Brandon Noble says it's "an opportunity to be successful and to get a career start, jump on their career and also, it's keeps them involved within their community."

The explorers recently took second place in the 2014 Governor's Cup, which is an annual Michigan competition. They also took third in the 2014 national competition, out of 245 teams, for officer down, which is emergency first aid.

Explorer Olivia Caton placed third in handgun marksmanship.
