New app helps animals in need through exercise Updated: Tuesday, July 22, 2014 (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Technology is making it easier than ever to give back, and now a new app is helping you get some exercise in the process. On a nice day you'll find lots of dog owners outside enjoying the day with their pets. Now a new app can help them raise money for their local animal shelter with a few simple steps. The app is call Woof-Trax. You can download it to your phone for free and then log on each time you head out for a walk. Each walk earns between 11 and 25 cents per mile, depending on the number of people signed up.The Humane Society of South Central Michigan is one of those to recently join."The more people who walk for your organization, the more money the Humane Society can actually raise. So we want to get as many people to walk for the Humane Society of South Central Michigan as possible," said Jessica Gilbert, Executive Director of the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. And if you don't have a dog, that's okay too."You can actually create your dream dog or you can do a shelter dog. Just any activity that you're doing outside you can go ahead and track that to the Human Society,"said Gilbert. The Humane Society says you can borrow their dogs and become a volunteer walker. For them, the thought of the extra cash for something that most dog owners do anyway is huge and could add up quickly."It's that kind of fundraising thing that makes a difference for us. We don't get any tax dollar or government support, we are 100 percent donor driven, so the money that we receive through donations and programs like this is what allows us stay in business," said Gilbert. If you don't have a place to walk, they've got that covered too."We have a dog park here at the shelter and a lot of people use our dog park. So when you're out here using it why not raise money for the animals and the shelter?" said Gilbert. So far more than 175,000 miles have been logged for shelters across the country. Shelters in all 50 states are signed up.For more information, click here.
