Local woman fighting to cure MS Updated: Saturday, August 3, 2013 | KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - For the 3rd year in a row, a west Michigan mom is making strides to end Multiple Sclerosis. And this year- she's taking even bigger steps to raise money to fight the disease. She was a young mom, seemingly very healthy, until one day she couldn't feel her fingers."My son was 9 months old and I woke up to the 3 outside fingers in my left hand being numb. As the next few days progressed it moved to my arm and down my leg and my side," said Amanda West, who was just 29 years old when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis."my doctor ordered an MRI and it showed legions on my brain and spine, said West. We were just kind of shocked."With a young baby at home and a desire to have another, Amanda and her doctor decided to wait on medical treatment because her symptoms are not very severe and her disease is not getting worse. Two and a half years later- she has a 3-year-old and a 5-month-old, and is still doing well."I think people associate MS with wheelchairs and not being able to walk, well and my symptoms than fully don't have to do with my walking. But I have a lot of numbness," said West. Now, Amanda is using her diagnosis to help others. "A couple months after I was diagnosed I needed an outlet. Somewhere to put my energy instead of being depressed." For the 3rd year she will be taking part in the Kalamazoo MS Walk. Her team has been the top money raiser the last 2.This weekend is her big fundraiser for the walk. For the second year- she is organizing a charity trivia tournament to help find a cure."It's important to me to find a cure. I have 2 kids and a husband that I need to be there for," said West. The trivia fundraiser is Sunday, April 14th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Wayside West in Kalamazoo.Anyone can sign up or just show up a little early to register. It's $15 per person and teams of 4 to 6 will compete.
