(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some so-called geeks are helping local students by pushing computers, not candy this Halloween season.
The Geek Group has members all over the country.
In Grand Rapids, it's promoting the message that being a geek--at least a computer geek--is cool.
As part of the geek's Computers Not Candy program, The Geek Group is donating 100 laptops to students who can't afford them.
Recipients are enrolled in pre-college engineering and biomedical programs, making them the perfect candidates for the computers.
DART Container program donated the computers to The Geek Group.
The laptops reflect The Geek Group's mission to give students access to tools that help them learn in their own way and at their own pace.
The Geeks also offer students a building with a lab and workshop to create an environment for self-driven learning.
A growing number of students are realizing that learning is fun and that it's cool to be a geek.
