W. Mich community getting behind farmers market story image
BANGOR, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan community is pushing for change by opening a new farmer's market.

Those behind it say there's not only a greater demand for fresh produce than ever before, but there's also a keen interest in a healthier way of living here in West Michigan.

Bangor leaders are hoping that promoting local at their farmers market will also promote a healthy lifestyle--a benefit to all of us, and the Michigan economy.

Ron and Ruth Pitcher make a living off their back yard--from berries to green beans, they say there's a growing demand in West Michigan for fresh produce.

"Just things we know that we like, so we know other people probably like them too," Ron said. "So we just go by that."

The couple sells their wares just down the street at the Bangor Farmers Market, which launched last year and is looking to grow.

"We are currently looking for more vendors; we usually have about 10," said the market manager. "I have had up to 16, and we have 25 spots available."

The market is hoping to pull in more buyers and sellers from Bangor and the surrounding community, encouraging a healthy lifestyle by buying local.

For Ron and Ruth, it isn't just a lifestyle, it's a livelihood. They're looking forward to selling at the market in the coming months, as their growing season is just getting started.

The market itself is open every Friday evening from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
