NFL takes stand on domestic violence story image

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The NFL is taking a stand against domestic violence.

The league's commissioner outlined a new policy with stiffer sanctions in a letter to team owners.

"It's a great start on something that's very prevalent in all communities everywhere," said domestic violence advocate Britni Soto.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced players and staff face a six-week suspension without pay for the first offense and a lifetime ban for a second offense.

The commissioner says he made the decision after Ravens Running Back Ray Rice was suspended for only two games after he was caught on camera beating his now wife until she was allegedly unconscious.

Goodell said about the suspension quote... "didn't get that right."

The NFL says even if a player applies to be reinstated, there is no guarantee of their request will be granted.

Players could face even more severe punishment depending on the circumstances of the crimes, including the "use of weapons or choking."

Of if the acts are committed against a pregnant woman or in the presence of a child.
