National Guard troops manning observation posts at Mexico border

Updated: Friday, August 15, 2014

TEXAS (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The first wave of National Guard troops has taken up observation posts along the Texas-Mexico border.

The "Several Dozen" soldiers are part of the up to 1,000 troops Texas Governor Rick Perry called up last month.

They have been specifically trained to man observation towers and will serve as extra eyes reporting suspicious activity on the border to authorities.

State officials have estimated the deployment will cost $12 million a month.
