BARRY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Amid ongoing controversy, a meeting scheduled in Barry Township for Tuesday night has been cancelled.

Leaders in were set to discuss their police chief.

The Barry Township Board was set to review Chief Victor Pierce's job. But, the township didn't post the meeting early enough to be in compliance with Michigan's Open Meetings Act.

The police force is being criticized for its size and is accused of abusing power.

The township board has voted to suspend all 34 of the department's reserve officers until further review.

Some are satisfied with that vote, others are upset.

"They just need to calm down. They're not well enough trained to carry a gun," said one speaker at Monday's meeting.

"I like knowing that there is reserve force to patrol our area and keep my children safe. I love knowing that there is policeman in our schools to keep my children safe," said another.

One group claims to have a petition with more than 1,000 signatures asking for drastic action against Chief Pierce.

But the chief says he was touched by the amount of support he heard during a meeting Monday night.

"That was a total blessing. It was wonderful to have so many different community individuals coming out and showing support. I really appreciated that moment," said Chief Pierce.

Just last week state police started investigating allegations of abuse of power within the department.

We now know MSP has finished that investigation and found no criminal activity done by any officers.

The next meeting date has not been set. We will let you know when that happens.
