New high-tech buoy launched in Lake Michigan Updated: Thursday, July 31, 2014 NEAR SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Meteorologists now have a new tool to measure conditions along West Michigan's lake shore. A high-tech weather and wave monitoring buoy was deployed about two miles off the South Haven shore, this week. It measures wave heights, air and water temperature and wind speeds. Similar buoys are used elsewhere, but this one fills a 70 mile gap. The information from the buoy is collected in real time and is viewable by the public. There are also images and video clips that are updated hourly.
