(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - American Airlines will charge a $150 fee each way for minors between 12 and 14 who fly alone.

This change starts September 3rd, the Wednesday after Labor Day.

Right now American charges a fee on top of the regular fare only for minors between 5 and 11.

American says extending the fee to more kids will ensure the "safest possible travel" for them and match the policy at U.S. airways.

The two airlines merged in December.

United, Delta, Southwest and Jetblue also charge additional fees for minors flying alone.
