Bill looks to ban 'gay conversion' therapy in Michigan

Bill looks to ban 'gay conversion' therapy in Michigan story image

LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Michigan State House has produced a bill aimed at banning so-called gay conversion therapy for minors.

The bill, HB 5703, was presented by 13 representatives, all Democrats, mostly from Oakland, Wayne or Macomb County.

The bill would amend the 1974 Mental Health Code so as to outlaw any attempt by a mental health professional to "change an individual's sexual orientation, including, but not limited to, efforts to change behavior, gender identity, or gender expression or to reduce or eliminate sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward an individual of the same gender."

A ban on the controversial form of therapy was signed in California in 2012, and was upheld by the Supreme Court late last month, when they declined to hear a challenge to the ban.

Nearly a year ago, Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed a similar ban in New Jersey, which was upheld by the US District Court nearly three months later.

Similar legislation was brought up but failed in 6 states, and has been introduced in 9 more.
