Busy night for police near WMU campus story image

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – It's a busy night for police near Western Michigan University's campus.

Newschannel 3's Aaron Dimick is live near the campus in Kalamazoo.

The big crowds are just starting to break up. Students are returning to Western Michigan -- and they're bringing lots of mayhem with them.

A lot of the action took place in the student neighborhoods off the WMU campus. The big parties come from what people refer to as Welcome Week, the days leading up the fall semester, which starts Tuesday.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were busy overnight, breaking up large parties and even putting out fires. According to initial reports, there were about six fires set in dumpsters overnight. It appears all of the fires were contained and put out quickly.

Kalamazoo Public Safety says it's putting out six to eight extra officers on nights like these to keep the peace.

Kalamazoo Public Safety Sgt. Matt Schmenauer says, "We've put on extra patrols to maintain a visual presence in the area. Also, if your party is getting too large, please call us and we'd be happy to close down the party for you and issue citations and make arrests."

Newschannel 3 is trying to find out if any arrests were made overnight.
