CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An Emmett Township public safety officer has been arrested and is accused of sex crimes involving a teenager.

The officer's name is Troy Estree, and he has been with Emmett police for around 10 years, and he was arrested by State Police Wednesday morning on warrants for first degree criminal sexual conduct.

Sources have confirmed for us the victim is under the age of 16 and she is related to Estree.

According to State Police, there were two separate incidents, and it is believed that Estree committed the crimes about a month ago at his home while he was off-duty.

Newschannel 3 talked to Emmett Township Police Chief Mike Olson about the charges Wednesday night.

"I was notified by the Michigan Department of State Police on Monday that they had opened an investigation," he said. "We certainly told them at that juncture that we would cooperate fully."

Chief Olson confirmed that Officer Estree was on paid administrative leave, and that "everything else will follow per the collective bargaining agreement."

"We're hurting, and that's probably the best description I can give you," Chief Olson said about the department's response. "This is never a pleasant experience for anybody. We hurt for the family, we hurt for our police family, and it's just never a good situation."

Estree's wife is a detective with the Battle Creek Police.

Chief Jim Blocker says she is devastated, and the department is doing everything possible to support her.

For Estree's own safety, he's in the Branch County Jail tonight.

He's scheduled to be arraigned in Calhoun County Thursday morning.
