Court date delayed for man accused in fatal stabbing of gas station clerk story image

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The man accused of fatally stabbing a gas station clerk in Calhoun County's Bedford Township was scheduled to be in court on Thursday, but his hearing was delayed.

Final autopsy results have not yet been completed, which led to the delay.

Last month police found 27-year-old Nicole Gates dead inside the Citgo gas station in Bedford Township where she worked.

They later arrested 30-year-old Pike for her murder.

Court documents show Pike met Gates on Facebook about a month before the murder.

According to the documents, Pike told police he went to the gas station with a knife, intending to rob the store so that he could skip town and avoid getting picked up for outstanding warrants.

Pike says when Gates tried to call 911 he stabbed her arm so she would drop the phone and then lost control, stabbing her until the knife broke.

Her family says if laws were in place so Gates was not working alone at night she might be alive still.

"There has to be more than one person there if there had been two people there. They wouldn't have come in, he wouldn't have come in. That's the way cowards work," said Nicole's father, Ronald Gates.

Pike's next court date has not yet been announced.
