LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - They were everywhere you looked on the capitol grounds during last months Right To Work protests, Michigan State Police troopers, keeping the peace.

MSP says it brought in manpower from all parts of the state.  It was a massive show of force and it was expensive.

The agency tells us it spend $901, 132 on overtime, travel, supplies and equipment.  That covered the week of December 5th to the 11th,  but it was primarily for the large protest on the 11th.

MSP says it's something they could not have planned for.

"No we do not budget for that, we have an overtime budget every year but it doesnt cover something like this.  Where the money will come from, that's yet to be determined," says MSP Captain Greg Zarotney.

Captain Greg Zarotney says MSP is hoping for a special appropriation from the legislature to cover the amount it spent.

Other agencies did also help, Lansing Police spent $31,404 just on December 11th.

East Lansing Police say they spent a few thousand dollars.

It was money MSP didn't want to spend, but says it was worth it.

"We consider this operation to be a huge success...we allowed the protestors to have their say, on both sides of the issue as well as keep the peace within the legislature," says Zarotney.

For comparison, Wisconsin spent more than $10 million when it had several weeks of protests at its capitol in 2011.
