Dry Conditions in West Michigan
ALLEGAN COUNTY (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The dry conditions this Summer certainly spell out trouble for corn growers.
Farmers in Allegan County report huge crop losses because there simply hasn't been enough rain.
But the trouble doesn't stop there. The conditions are perfect for brush and forest fires. As an agricultural expert put it, Allegan County is the epicenter for drought conditions. That means the fire danger is extremely high.
Wednesday at the campsite it's a lunch made with caution. Robert Van Dyke checked in with the park ranger before starting a fire and keeps it low.
The chief of the Allegan County Fire District says he doesn't remember dry conditions ever being this bad. "The forest itself is a tinderbox if that takes off, same potential in California for a fire," said Chief Bruce Hoyer.
Chief Hoyer says people have been good about obeying burn bans throughout the county, especially knowing there could be severe financial consequences if a fire gets out of control.
"There are now fire departments using cost recovery. If found responsible, [people are] billed for the entire duration of the call," said Hoyer.
He reminds people that a fire can jump in a matter of seconds, especially if there's any wind helping to move the flames.
Van Dyke says he keeps a close eye on his campfires, making sure there's nothing near the pit. "If it is close, scoop away, no sparks in it," said Van Dyke.
Campfires are still allowed under a burn restriction. The DNR says a burn ban has to come from the governor's office.
