Courtroom Brawl Follows Fisher's Guilty Verdict

BATTLE CREEK (Newschannel 3) - A Calhoun County man found guilty of killing his wife and son became violent Monday afternoon in court after hearing his fate.

Michael Fisher was found guilty of murdering his wife Candy and son Michael Jr. back in December 2006. Fisher's trial began last week, and it wasn't a jury trial, but rather a bench trial, where a judge would reach a verdict alone.

But as Calhoun Co. Circuit Court Judge Allan Garbrecht ruled against Fisher on Monday, Fisher charged at a nearby deputy, reaching for his gun.

"He was clearly going for the gun, there was no question about that," said Calhoun Co. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Michael Jaconette.

As the struggle ensued, lawyers and security guards swarmed Fisher and the deputy, and Fisher was tasered.

Candy's daughter, Nicole Bergdorf, was in the courtroom as the brawl happened, and she told Newschannel 3 that she's still scared about what could have happened.

"I was just shaking, I couldn't control my shaking," she said. "I was scared to death."

For Candy's family, the outburst proved Fisher's guilt and his violent nature. But perhaps the most disturbing to those in the courtroom was what happened as Fisher was escorted out - he left laughing.

Fisher will likely face charges for attempting to disarm the deputy, in addition to the mandatory life sentence without parole for the murder convictions.
