Record gas prices and holiday travel

WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Gas prices hit another record high this weekend.

AAA says the gas prices rose to an all time high for the holiday weekend. The national average reached about $4.11 a gallon.

Although gas prices are over a dollar more than last year, it turns out it didn't stop that many people from enjoying the holiday weekend.

AAA says travel over the July 4th holiday weekend only went down about 1.3 percent. That means about 40.5 million consumers decided not to travel. It was a much smaller number than many industry experts expected.

AAA representatives believe many travelers took advantage of all the incentives and discounts travel destinations were offering to encourage consumers.

In Michigan prices actually dropped a couple cents from last week, but that's little consolation when the state average still stands at $4.16 per gallon.

State lawmakers are calling press conferences Monday to talk about about alternatives.
