Pleasantview decision coming Monday

HASTINGS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some parents in the Hastings School District are continuing their fight to keep Pleasantview Elementary open.

The school board will decide the fate of that school next week.

The district is strapped for cash and says closing Pleasantview could save $330,000 a year, allowing some teachers to keep their jobs.

Thursday night parents asked the school board to spare Pleasantview and close another school instead.

Parents claim that Star Elementary School has toxic mold and could be unsafe for the children.

The superintendent was quick to shoot that notion down.

"That is incorrect. They have had mold there when they clean the carpets, we again today had analytical testing to test the mold, the health department was with them, the health department was satisfied there wasn't a problem," said Superintendent Richard Saterlee.

The school board says it will vote Monday whether to close Pleasantview Elementary.
