Jury Deliberating Fate Of Woman Charged With Drugging Baby
Comments 0 | Recommend 0BATTLE CREEK (Newschannel 3) - A jury is deliberating in the case of a woman accused of killing a baby in her care.
Doctors say 5-month-old Damien Lewis died last September, after he overdosed on the sleeping drug, Ambien.
Ruthann Jarvis, the woman running his day care, is now on trial for Second-degree Child Abuse and Murder in Damien's death.
While Jarvis didn't take the stand on Wednesday, a recorded interview was shown, where after first denying knowing anything about Damien's death, she finally admitted to giving him the sleeping pill.
Prosecutors say Jarvis knew the pill could kill the boy, but gave it to him anyway. The defense says she initially failed to tell police about the pill because she was scared.
The prosecution asked the jury to find Jarvis guilty of Second Degree Murder, while the defense says at most, it's Involuntary Manslaughter. The jury is now deliberating the case.
