MARTIN TWP., Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 14-year-old has drown in a West Michigan lake.

Allegan County Deputies say they were called to the public access site at Lake 16 in Martin Twp. just before 6:30pm Friday.

Montrel Alonzo Jeffries, 14, of Shelbyville, was swimming with two other boys who said he went under the water about 30 yards off shore. Deputies found Jeffries only six minutes after arriving on the scene, but the teen had been under seven feet of water for about 40 minutes beforehand.

Deputies say Jeffries was not breathing when they found him and was transported to Pipp E.R. in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.

At this time, officials believe the drowning was an accident, and they are still investigating.
