Michigan's AG announces Project SCAMS
Comments 0 | Recommend 0(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Michigan's Attorney General's office is focusing on our aging population Thursday.
It says too many seniors are at risk of people taking advantage of them.
Representatives from the Attorney General's office plan to visit all 450 nursing homes in Michigan.
Mike Cox stopped at a West Michigan church to help get the word out Thursday.
The joint effort is called Project SCAMS, which stands for Stop Crimes Against Michigan Seniors. It's in the start up phase right now.
In West Michigan, three people are charged with embezzlement from a vulnerable adult in Newaygo, Wyoming and Cedar Springs. In many cases the criminals are family members.
[This is] "also a wake up call for other family members. Ask questions. How's mom, dad, or uncle Joe being taken care of? And ask questions at the nursing home, is everything OK. Is there anything I should know about?" Said Michigan's Attorney General Michael Cox.
The Attorney General's office is trying to identify those who are being exploited by looking at people who have past due payments at nursing homes.
About 40,000 people live in nursing homes in Michigan.
