Man finds old military shell while fishing in Detroit River
Comments 0 | Recommend 0DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - An old military shell that a Wayne County man toyed with as a conversation piece had forced the evacuation of several homes in Dearborn Heights.
Dearborn Heights police Deputy Chief Lee Gavin says the Garden City man found the shell Wednesday while fishing in the Detroit River near Trenton.
Gavin says the man had taken the shell home where friends warned him to get rid of it.
The man had planned to toss it back in the river Thursday afternoon, but stopped at a Dearborn Heights fire station, about 10 miles southwest of Detroit.
Gavin says fire officials evacuated the building and some homes after powder seeped from the shell. The Dearborn police bomb squad destroyed it later in a municipal incinerator.
