Govt. Shows Fuel Efficiency Requirements Options
Comments 0 | Recommend 0WASHINGTON (AP) - The government is presenting a range of options for new fuel efficiency standards that the auto industry will need to meet during the next decade.
The fleet of new cars and trucks would have to meet requirements of 29.6 miles per gallon to 33.6 mpg by 2015, according to an environmental impact document released by the government Friday.
The estimates were offered as a range of options by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is finalizing the standards.
President Bush signed into law an energy bill last year that requires the industry to meet up to 35 mpg by 2020. NHTSA released a plan earlier this year that would require the fleet of new cars and trucks to reach 31.6 mpg by 2015.
