(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A lot of West Michigan students are enjoying spring break, but that doesn't mean there isn't anything going on for schools.

    MEAP test results are in.

Overall, it looks like kids in Michigan are learning to crunch numbers themselves.

Math scores have improved across the state for every grade tested except fifth grade.

The state says it's also seeing a trend that students in earlier grades score at higher levels in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Overall, there was about a seventy percent pass rate in reading for students, but the state superintendent says it's still not good enough.

When looking at math scores in Kalamazoo, most grades are seeing increases, but overall, about 40 percent don't meet expectations.

A lot of work still needs to be done in writing, with more than half falling below expectations in most grades.

The district says it does see some encouraging signs, but acknowledges there is still lot of work to do.

We also heard from the Grand Rapids School District about the results. The district says its optimistic following the 2007 scores.

The superintendent there saying one size fits all testing will never truly capture the remarkable progress of the schools.
