Plane crash at Lowell Airport

LOWELL, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A small plane has crashed at the Lowell Airport.

The crash occured just after 6:00 pm.

Reports say that the plane crashed on takeoff when the pilot realized he would not be able to develop sufficient lift, causing him to crash a few hundred yards from where the runway ended.

Firefighters extinguished the flames with chemical foam. Officials say pilot, 33-year-old Chris Harper of Alto, who owns the plane, escaped without injury.

The passenger, 34-year-old Joshua Enrico of Grand Rapids, suffered scratches to his face.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.
