Board: New Commuter Policy for Mackinac Bridge
ST. IGNACE, Mich. (AP) - The Mackinac Bridge Authority board has adopted a new fare policy for drivers who commute across the 5-mile-long span.
After considering two alternatives Friday, the board approved a modified version that will take effect in January 2010.
Motorists who cross the bridge and make a return trip within 36 hours will qualify as commuters, who get a reduced rate. The board had considered defining commuters as people returning within 24 hours.
For their initial crossing, commuters will pay $3.50. But they'll pay only a dime to return, for a round-trip total of $3.60.
The board also extended the expiration date for current commuters by another year. Those cards are now valid until Dec. 31, 2010.
