Boy, 14, gets probation for boozy police chase
HANDY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 14-year-old Livingston County boy who authorities say led police on a high-speed chase in his father's SUV has received 10 months' probation.
The Handy Township teen says he fled because he feared police would learn he'd been drinking.
He pleaded guilty Oct. 20 to third-degree fleeing police and being a minor in possession of alcohol.
A juvenile court referee sentenced him Tuesday, also ordering him to perform 40 hours' community service. The referee also ordered the boys' parents to take parenting classes.
The boy says he was asked to move the SUV during a July 4 party, but instead decided to keep going.
A sheriff's deputy tried to pull him over, but he fled. The boy crashed, breaking his nose and a spinal ligament.
