Updated: Possible explosive device found near school

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police in Kalamazoo discovered a possible explosive device inside a car at the Madeira Apartments at 1610 East Cork Street Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to that area on a different issue just before 3 p.m. on Thursday.

About 100 yards from that car is an Elementary School. The school was not evacuated.

Police are still investigating, but the scene has been cleared. The device has been described as some sort of inert training device. Police are still working to determine if that device was capable of exploding.

Police originally responded to a 911 call for a drug overdose when they found the device in the back of a jeep.

That jeep belongs to an Iraq war veteran named William Meggs. Newschannel 3 has not been able to confirm that Meggs was the person overdosing, but we do know that person is alright.

Newschannel 3 has a crew working on this story we will bring you the latest updates in the investigation.
