Hazing incident cancels JV baseball season
Comments 0 | Recommend 0COOPERSVILLE (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A junior varsity baseball team is under investigation.
The case involves an alleged hazing incident at Coopersville High School after a Friday practice. Four students from the junior varsity team have been suspended, and more discipline may be coming.
School officials tell us the team had wrapped up a Friday practice and was in the high school locker room. The Assistant Superintendent tells us it appears one or more students were held on the ground while other players did things to them against their will.
"[The] behavior is concerning, some elements of assault," said Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
The alleged assault was first reported to a sheriff department school liaison officer. The school says an investigation was immediately launched internally and by the sheriff's department.
"From that point we moved forward to speak with individuals involved. Making sure kids are safe is our top priority," said Principal Ron Veldman.
The rest of the season was canceled with one week left.
