Michigan Republicans Propose Gas Tax Holiday

MICHIGAN (Newschannel 3) - Some state lawmakers are trying to ease the pain at the pump, at least temporarily.

Republican lawmakers want to waive the Michigan's 6 percent sales tax on gasoline, from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

They say it's a good plan to help Michigan drivers and boost tourism, and they say it may actually help the state's budget.

"If we bring in more tourism, more people to the state, we may actually see an increase in revenue to state coffers," said Texas Twp. Rep. Jack Hoogendyk (R).

The proposal does not lift the $0.19-per-gallon gas tax that the state charges. That money, which goes for road construction and maintenance, would still be collected.
