FAST FEEDBACK: Students protest concealed carry policy

KALAMAZOO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some college students feel emergency alert systems aren't enough and they're taking a stand Monday.

They are wearing empty holsters as a form of protest.

It is their way of saying, hey, thousands of college students are licensed to carry a concealed weapon in public, so why can't we do it on campus?

It is illegal to carry a concealed weapon at any college in the state of Michigan.

All this week, thousands of students are standing up and saying, they don't agree with the law.

We spoke with two of them enrolled Western. Their message is this: As licensees, they've completed hours of training, they've been cleared by the FBI to carry a concealed weapon in grocery stores and movie theaters, so why is campus any different?

"We feel it would be more a deterrent to criminals and also that damage could be minimized and losses could be minimized by having trained, licensed individuals there with the means and training to defend themselves," said Jeff Koenig.

Currently, only 11 college campuses in the U.S. allow students to carry concealed weapons. Colorado State University, Blue Ridge Community College and all nine public colleges in Utah allow them.
