Parchment H.S. Student Saves Middle-Schooler's Life

PARCHMENT (Newschannel3) - A Parchment High School student has saved the life of a middle-schooler who collapsed during track practice.

The middle schooler,Jenna Motts, had been practicing with her track team when she suddenly fell to the ground at the Parchment High School track.

Her coach Tom Novak said she reached the end of the track and collapsed

"I put my hand on her back," said Novak. "I didn't get a good feeling at that time."

At that point, Novak says he yelled for anybody who knew anything about trauma care.

Emily Kuiper, a senior at Parchment High School, had been on the soccer field, and came running when she heard Novak calling for help.

"I found (her) unconscious, and I checked her breathing and her pulse," said Kuiper. "They were not there.

Kuiper said she began compressions while Novak started the breathing. Then, minutes after CPR was initiated, the seventh-grader came to life.

"I don't remember anything between that time and the time I got to the ER," said Motts.

Motts is currently sidelined, until doctors in Ann Arbor find the reasoning behind her collapse. And Kuiper is being commended for her quick action, which most likely saved Mott's life.

"She stayed calm and cool the whole time," said Novak. "She was fantastic."

Kuiper says she learned CPR through the Allied Health and Science Program that she is currently enrolled in, and plans to go to college to become a nurse.

Novak says he has been trained in CPR, but the incident is a reminder to him and other coaches to keep up-to-date on the training.
