Controversial comments from Pope draw another look

Controversial comments from Pope draw another look story image

VATICAN CITY (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some controversial comments from Pope Francis are getting another look Monday morning.

An article in an Italian newspaper quoted the Pontiff as saying reliable data shows "about 2 percent" of clergy in the Catholic Church are pedophiles.

The Pope said that abuse of children was like "leprosy" infecting the church, and he vowed to "confront it with the severity it demands."

But a Vatican spokesman said the quotes in the newspaper did not correspond to Pope Francis's exact words.

The remarks in the interview come one week after the Pope asked for forgiveness in his first meeting with victims of clerical sexual abuse.
