NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - More than 100 undocumented children caught at the US-Mexico border had immigration hearings in New York on Thursday.

16-year-old Christian Munguia came to the federal courthouse seeking asylum from his home country, Honduras.

He's part of the recent wave of unaccompanied immigrant children from Central America.

He left the courthouse with an adjournment in his case until February--seven months from now.

Immigration attorneys say the gang violence in Central America is so rampant and the U.S. immigration system is so backlogged that people are getting desperate.

"A lot of the judges are scheduling cases in 2018; we're talking four years from now," said immigration attorney Dawn Pipek-Guidone.

President Obama has requested about $45 million to hire additional immigration judges to handle the backlog of cases.
