Man rescued after trench collapse

Updated: Wednesday, March 20 2013, 09:55 AM EDT
NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A construction worker trapped chest deep in mud for hours has finally been pulled to safety Wednesday morning.

The man is said to be in stable but serious condition.

He was stuck in a trench roughly 75 to 100 feet below the city working on subway construction when the sides caved in burying him in the mud.

Firefighters were finally able to pull him to safety just before 1:00 a.m.

Three firefighters were hurt during the rescue, one with a broken hand, another was wheeled away on a stretcher with unspecified injuries.
